Abstract
Étienne Guyon (1935–2023) was a pioneering French physicist whose research profoundly deepened our understanding of diverse physical phenomena, including superconductivity, superfluidity, liquid crystals, hydrodynamic instabilities, porous media, and granular matter. A prolific educator and gifted communicator, he transformed science education through his influential textbooks and popular science books. Guyon’s interdisciplinary approach, blending statistical physics, fluid mechanics, and soft matter, led to lasting scientific contributions. He founded the PMMH laboratory at ESPCI and played a key role in establishing France’s MIAM network for interdisciplinary research. As director of major institutions such as the Palais de la Découverte and the École Normale Supérieure, he was a passionate advocate for scientific outreach and cultural inclusivity. Remembered as a visionary thinker, eloquent writer, and joyful humanist, Étienne Guyon leaves a legacy that bridges rigorous scientific inquiry and public engagement.
