Abstract
A simple approach to the analysis of the coordination of physiologically significant brain rhythms during changes in functional state is proposed, and its diagnostic capabilities are considered using the example of different stages of sleep–wake cycles in three age groups. This approach allows reducing the influence of non-stationarity and artificial segments in experimental data. A comparison of the coordination of rhythms in the stages of light, deep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is carried out. In the first two cases, an increase in the degree of correlation with age for a different set of rhythm pairs is noted. The most pronounced age-related distinctions in the proposed measure, which compares the dynamics of rhythms during sleep with the state of wakefulness, are demonstrated in the REM sleep stage.
