EPJ ST Special Issue: Transport Phenomena and Phase Transitions in Soft and Disordered Systems

This special issue is devoted to the experimental, theoretical as well as computational studies of fundamental features in transport phenomena, structural and phase transitions in various soft and disordered systems (polymers, colloids, glasses, amorphous, crystalline, and composite materials) involved in macroscopically non-equilibrium processes (hydrodynamic flows; non-stationary deformations, heat and mass transfer and generation). Special attention is focused on a detailed microscopical study of the effects of internal structural and phase transformations on macroscopic physical properties and phenomena in the systems under study.

The special issue will be devoted to the following problems.

  • Heat generation and transfer in a system of interacting ferromagnetic particles, distributed in a soft medium, modeling biological tissue. The aim of works of this direction is the progress in the scientific background of the method of magnetic hyperthermia for therapy of cancer and other tumor diseases.
  • Synthesis, experimental, and computational studies of magnetopolymer composites as materials for soft actuators and robots. Ferrogels with pre-programmed complex movement (bending, twisting, etc.), with gradients of magnetic nanoparticle concentration, with anisotropic aggregates of the particles will be studied.
  • Experimental and theoretical study of circulation flows in channels with Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids, containing drops of ferrofluids, placed under the action of an alternating magnetic field. The aim of these works is the development of the scientific background for magnetically induced intensification of drug transport and delivery in thrombosed blood vessels.
  • Theoretical modeling of a ferrofluid flow in channels of variable cross-sections and the fluid local dynamic response to an external magnetic field. The aim of these works is to create a theoretical basis for detecting the local blood flow velocity in blood vessels to determine the degree of the vessels narrowing with stenotic plaques.
  • Theoretical and computational studies of phase and structural transformations in metastable and non-equilibrium materials (undercooled melts, supersaturated solutions, and the like). These studies are devoted to the description of experimental data and modeling the dynamics of the systems under consideration.
  • Pattern formation met in the aforementioned processes and natural phenomena. This research direction is concerned with the peculiarities of origination and evolution of the new-phase elements during phase transformations in various soft and disordered systems.

Papers dealing with powerful computational methods and complex simulations with high-performance computer clusters in the aforementioned research directions are welcome.

This special issue should serve as a convenient forum for discussing trends and achievements, to find new solutions, and to strengthen the research collaborations and will be of interest to a wide range of specialists in physics and engineering in soft matters, biological tissues, disordered and composite materials, in complex fluids.

The Guest Editors invite authors to submit their original research and short reviews on the topic to the Editorial Office of EPJ ST via the submission system clearly mentioning the title of the special issue.
