EPJ ST Special Issue: Fluid-Fluid and Fluid-Soft Matter Interaction

The domain of fluid mechanics – whether Newtonian or complex fluids – intersects several traditional domains of research such as condensed matter, colloids and environmental flows. The topics of fluid-fluid interaction has in many ways remained a classical topic with a very rich literature informing domains such as multi-phase flows, interfacial flows and fluid-droplet interactions. Countless applications involve interaction of droplets with fluid dynamical instabilities, high speed flow, flow with discontinuities like shock, substrate (soft or rigid), porous media etc. These interactions are typically multiscale spanning large spatio-temporal regimes. The physics also involves droplet breakup dynamics, interfacial transport, in-situ reactions, self assembly among others.

The issue will cater to fluid-fluid, fluid-structure and fluid-soft matter interactions such as, but not limited to

  • Drying of complex fluids on flexible substrates
  • Impact of complex fluids
  • Gravity waves and interaction with objects
  • Active matter in complex geometries and related problems
  • Micro rheology as applied to fluid-matter interactions
  • Thin film instabilities
  • Droplet interaction with fluid dynamical instabilities
  • Complex flows through flexible channels

We invite contributions from authors on these topics.

Types of manuscripts that are acceptable are:

a) Minireview: A typically 10-15 pages contribution, where approximately half of the material is in form of representative mini-review of the entire subtopic/subfield, followed by, approximately of the same length, a short review of own past and present work, coherently summarized and explained in the broader context of the first part.
b) Tutorial Review: A 15+ pages tutorial review (lecture) on a broader topic that adds significantly more introductory and background material to make this reasonably self-contained reading for graduate students and non-specialists from related areas.
c) Original Paper (v1): A typically 5-10 pages contribution, which contains a significant fraction of original material e.g. because it is a follow up paper of a recently published letter or rapid communication providing more background and details and/or possibly an update re results.
d) Original Paper (v2) : A short study, typically 3-5 pages containing predominantly new material, on a very specific aspect of some broader research published elsewhere.

Not accepted are the following paper categories:

e) Only review of own recent work
f) Summaries and/or condensates of recently published (or to be published) material

Manuscripts should be prepared using the latex template (preferably 2-column layout), which can be downloaded here and should be submitted to the EPJ ST Editorial Office via the submission system, clearly identified as intended for the topical issue “Fluid-Fluid and Fluid-Soft Matter Interaction”.
