We propose a new model to describe the process of High Harmonic Generation in atoms [L. Plaja et al., Opt. Expr. 15, 3629 (2007); J.A. Pérez-Hernández et al., Phys. Rev. A 76, 023829 (2007)]. Our development is based on the S-Matrix formalism in the Strong Field Approximation. In contrast with other approaches, our model provides a quantitative description and retains the quantum features of the process, since we do not use the stationary phase approximation. We also consider the contribution of continuum-continuum transitions. The model is very easy to implement numerically and it is much more efficient than the full solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.
