This short editorial contains the introductory remarks for the special issue “discussions and debates” on the subject of “rogue waves”. This issue is the first of its kind, in the sense that the authors have the chance to discuss the basic concepts of an emerging topic in science. Based on these discussions, an attempt to give a “definition” of a rogue wave is made.
