An estimation of instantaneous phases from time series has many applications in data science, including the analysis of oscillatory signals of biological origin. This study compares different methods for estimation of the instantaneous phases, methods based on the Hilbert transform and the driven linear oscillator. The methods were tested with the model photoplethysmogram and RR-interval time series with preset and known phases. We propose a new approach, combining the strengths of two methods based on the Hilbert transform and the driven linear oscillator. It is shown that the proposed method has lower median standard deviation of the difference between the estimated and true phases, and a number of “phase jumps” is the same as for the approach, based on the driven linear oscillator. At the same time, the proposed method makes fewer errors related to the “phase jumps” compared to the method based on the Hilbert transform.
