Abstract
Hydrodynamics of surfactant monolayers are governed by surface tension, surface shear viscosity, surface dilatational viscosity, and surface diffusivity. All of these quantities vary nonlinearly with the monolayer concentration. The variation of surface tension and of surface shear viscosity with concentration are readily measured as their effects can be isolated to give measurable responses. On the other hand, identifying techniques to isolate the effects of either surface dilatational viscosity or surface diffusivity have presented challenges. In this paper, we review the various attempts and successes in meeting these challenges, with a focus on our own efforts with insoluble monolayers.
