EPJ ST Special Issue: Energy Saving in Physics Research and Applications

Guest Editors: Jürgen Kurths, Holger Kersten, Harinipriya Seshadri, B. Ananthanarayan

Energy saving is one of the most challenging problems and of highest relevance due to the expected impacts on limiting or mitigating global climate change. While there is a lot of research and development going into novel energy saving science and technology, research itself - both fundamental and applied, academic and industrial - can self-examine its own practices, quite independently of the scale of their contribution, to lead the way in setting, fostering and promoting best approaches and practices in energy saving.

This issue in EPJ ST aims thus to collect papers in which the research community, being active in various academic and industrial fields and institutions, reflects on how to contribute itself, from individual up to most general initiatives to energy savings in daily operations and research work, to the global goal of saving energy resources. Emphasis will be on

  • Energy saving for sustainable science at major physics-related research infrastructures (large international laboratories and collaborations, R&D in related industry, space and plasma research...)
  • Energy saving in smaller laboratories, table-top experiments, energy harvesting...
  • Energy-efficient development of new computational methods, algorithms, data storage, sharing and analysis in physics and physics-related research
  • Energy efficient approach towards implementation of renewables at small and large scales
  • Energy saving towards the grid connectivity and grid parity of the renewables

Papers on related topics will be welcome, as will be papers that connect energy saving research for both best practices in research itself and in the intended global applications. All article types are welcome: original articles, protocols, technology transfer overviews, conceptual design reports, white papers, short reviews in form of perspective papers etc.

Articles should be submitted to the Editorial Office of EPJ ST via the submission system, and should be clearly identified as intended for the topical issue “Energy Saving in Physics Research and Applications”.

Submissions should follow the guidelines of EPJ Special Topics, which can be found here. For the preparation of the manuscripts a special latex template (preferably single-column layout) is available here.

Open Access: If the CORRESPONDING author is affiliated to an institute that has an Open Access agreement with Springer, the OA publication - if verified - is paid by the agreement partner. All OA agreements are listed with more details here. Eligibility will be automatically verified when the corresponding author is requested to complete the relevant affiliation information after acceptance of the paper during the production process. Corresponding authors not affiliated to institutes with Open Access Agreements are redirected to proceed with “Please select your publishing model” and have to decide between paying the current Open Access fee - for details see How to publish with us | The European Physical Journal Special Topics (springer.com) and Open Choice programme) - or choosing the subscription option without any publication charges.
