EPJ ST Special Issue: Transport Phenomena of Nanofluids in Cavities - Current Trends and Applications

The studies of flows within cavities are used to model several experimental analysis arise in many branches of engineering, technology and medical. The fluid flow in cavities is one of the most preferred geometries to examine the characteristics of some design parameters on the thermal performance of simulated systems. The impact of flow rate and cavity size on two-dimensional flow in a rectangular cavity is used to analyse the clearance time of debris in renal pelvis. The studies on cavity flows play a significant role to enhance the performance of short-dwell coating, removal of species from structured surfaces, mixing and flow in drying devices. The characteristics of drag-reducing riblets can be analysed by using the eddy structures obtained from the driven-cavity flows. The studies on enclosures with time-dependent thermal boundary conditions play a vital role to improve the effectiveness of the heat removal from electronic components and food storage facilities. Various type of cavities such as square, rectangle, triangle, trapezoidal, hexagonal, C, D, F, H, I, L, T, U, V, X, and Y – shaped have been analysed to examine the transport phenomena of varies fluids.

Submissions are invited for a special issue of EPJ ST on ‘Physics of Animal Navigation’.
Animal navigation constitutes a fascinating topic of research where scientists have been attempting to answer some key and basic questions explaining the mechanisms behind it. Most of the scientific explanations of numerous animals for their orientation and navigation derive from physics ideas. We have the magnetoreception on animals, especially birds, and the effects of geomagnetism. Other mechanisms involve infrasounds, ultrasounds and echolocation like in bats. Light and visual systems are extremely important for insect vision and bird navigation. Another important issue is celestial navigation, by which certain birds and insect find their orientation by using the sun compass by detecting the polarized light pattern of the sky. Furthermore, other mechanisms derived from quantum physics such as quantum entanglement in the cryptochrome hypothesis appear to have some relevance. Turbulent flows in the atmosphere and the oceans have also a role. Thermal boundaries in thermodynamics, as well as energetic and efficient movements or infrared radiation. And even effects due to gravitational variations.
The main aim of this Special Issue on Physics of Animal Navigation is to explore this fascinating interdisciplinary field of research bringing together scientists from different disciplines and giving a general overview of the state of the art of the role that Physics plays in Animal Navigation.
EPJ ST Special Issue: The Dynamics of the Covid-19 Pandemic - Nonlinear approaches on the modelling, prediction and control

This special issue is devoted to articles which propose mathematical models of the spread of the novel coronavirus and its effect in future waves. Especially those timely, should play a key role in informing evidence-based decisions on public health, society, industry, economics, and technology by policymakers.
In this special issue, we intend to invite front-line researchers and authors to submit original research articles and short reviews on the dynamics of the novel corona virus based on physics and mathematical approaches. The selected manuscripts should have approaches related to nonlinear dynamics.

The prolific growth in global energy demand together with increasing concerns over environmental pollution requires urgent solutions to efficiently harvest and store renewable energy resources. Toward realizing this, a significant amount of research has been devoted in recent years to the discovery of innovative functional materials with high performance for applications in energy conversion and storage. In particular, a wide range of novel low-dimensional and nanostructured materials have been reported achieving greatly improved performances. This special issue is dedicated to the latest advancements in low-dimensional and nanostructured materials for energy applications with an emphasis on reporting new knowledge at the interface of physics and chemistry.

Submissions are invited for a Special Issue of EPJ ST on “Complex Urban Systems”.
The rapid trend of urbanization that will see 68% of the world’s population living in cities by 2050 poses numerous challenges to our cities and to the local governments that bear responsibility for addressing the needs of its citizens. Science and technology play a key role in helping us increase our understanding of urban processes and in solving complex urban problems, such as facilitating the reliable transportation of people and goods, securing availability of electrical power and water that meet the needs of the growing population and related waste disposal needs, ensuring the health and wellness of urban populations (in particular of older adults and people with disabilities), making our cities more accessible and inclusive, preparing for the expected waves of migration due to environmental change, and supporting local governments to be more responsive to the needs of the citizens they serve. None of these challenges can be addressed in isolation: urban environments represent complex, intertwined social-economic-technical-environmental systems that require new inter-/cross-disciplinary approaches for scientific research and the development of technological solutions.
EPJ ST Special Issue: Frontiers of Fractals for Complex Systems: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

The fractal theory has been born which aims to understand complexity and provide an innovative way to recognize irregularity and complex systems. The idea of fractals enables us to see a certain symmetry and order even in an otherwise seemingly disordered and complex system. The importance of the discovery of fractals can hardly be exaggerated. Since its discovery there has been a surge of research activities in using this powerful concept in almost every branch of scientific disciplines to gain deep insights into many unresolved problems. A large number of applications dealing with the fractal geometry of things as diverse as the price changes and salary distributions, turbulence, statistics of error in telephone message, word frequencies in written texts, in aggregation and fragmentation processes are just to name a few.

The 100th birthday of Professor Yoichiro Nambu, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2008, was on 18th January 2021. Professor Nambu was one of the most influential theoretical physicists of the twentieth century. His deep and unexpected insights often took years for others to understand and fully appreciate. They include spontaneous symmetry breaking, for which he was awarded half of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics; Nambu Mechanics; the theory of quarks and gluons, and string theory.
We would like to commemorate this landmark birthday with a special issue of EPJST entitled Symmetry, Dynamics and Strings: A Centennial Issue in Honor of Yoichiro Nambu. We invite contributions to this issue of articles that are inspired by his seminal and panoramic work. Besides particle physics, contributions from other disciplines in which he worked such as spontaneous symmetry breaking are encouraged. Short reviews may also be submitted.
EPJ ST Special Issue: Current Trends in Computational and Experimental Techniques in Nonlinear Dynamics

This EPJ ST Issue is concerned with state-of-the-art techniques and its applications in experimental and computational studies of Nonlinear Dynamics. The ubiquity of nonlinearity in nature allows for a broad, constructive and practical perspective on systems as diverse as coupled mechanical oscillators, n-body systems, optical devices, chemical reactions, to name just a few active traditional fields, as well as new exciting areas made at the interfaces between multiple traditional fields, such as biophysics.
The tools of Nonlinear Dynamics, where dynamical systems and its applications are at its core, can provide deep insight into essential phenomena in diverse models and experiments.
The special issue is therefore devoted to emphasize the relevance, scope and usefulness of these techniques in tackling with current problems of physical and practical significance.

This special issue is devoted to the experimental, theoretical as well as computational studies of fundamental features in transport phenomena, structural and phase transitions in various soft and disordered systems (polymers, colloids, glasses, amorphous, crystalline, and composite materials) involved in macroscopically non-equilibrium processes (hydrodynamic flows; non-stationary deformations, heat and mass transfer and generation). Special attention is focused on a detailed microscopical study of the effects of internal structural and phase transformations on macroscopic physical properties and phenomena in the systems under study.

Neural networks have an inevitable effect on world life. The role of neural networks can be observed in various subjects of sciences and engineering including associative memory, image processing, solving linear and nonlinear programming, computing technology and so forth. It has been demonstrated that if the parameters of networks are appropriately chosen, the neural networks can show chaotic behaviors and complicated dynamics. As it is obvious, due to the broadband application of chaotic neural networks as well as their random-like behavior, the development of novel methods, new models, and extending the existing techniques for analysis of these systems is of crucial importance, and more studies must be carried out in this field of study.
